Preparing Elementary Students for a Confident Start Next Fall

Summer does not need to look like school to help children grow.

In fact, some of the most important growth happens in the ordinary moments: getting dressed, packing a bag, helping with a meal, solving a problem, recovering from frustration, or trying again when something does not go perfectly the first time.

As we wrap up another meaningful school year, we wanted to share a few simple ways families can support children over the summer, along with important orientation dates as we look ahead to fall.

Across all grade levels, the greatest growth we see often comes from strengthening independence, self-help, emotional regulation, and executive functioning.

🌱 TK & Kindergarten

Summer is a powerful time to build independence in simple, meaningful ways. Dressing independently, carrying belongings, and cleaning up after play all build confidence and ownership.

Over the Summer
  • Encourage independence in daily tasks
  • Practice simple routines
  • Use clear directions (“First…, then…”)
  • Prioritize play and movement
“I Can Do It Myself” Routine
First get dressed, then read a book.
🗓 TK & K Orientation: May 19 | 2:30–3:30 PM
✏️ 1st Grade

This is a big shift year toward responsibility and stamina. Small daily ownership makes a big difference.

Over the Summer
  • Pack their own items
  • Follow routines independently
  • Build focus through short work time
Daily Quiet Work
10–15 minutes of drawing, writing, or building.
🗓 1st Grade Orientation: May 20 | 2:30–3:30 PM
📘 2nd & 3rd Grade

Now the focus expands to organization, responsibility, and social growth.

Over the Summer
  • Give real responsibilities
  • Allow natural consequences
  • Encourage problem-solving
Plan a Snack or Meal
Let them choose, prepare, and clean up.
🗓 2nd & 3rd Grade Orientation: May 13 | 2:30–3:30 PM
🎯 4th & 5th Grade

Students are ready for real independence, ownership, and reflection.

Over the Summer
  • Own responsibilities fully
  • Solve problems before asking for help
  • Practice communication and advocacy
Plan a Project
Movie night, day trip, or small event.
🗓 4th & 5th Grade Orientation: May 12 | 2:30–3:30 PM

Final Thought

Summer growth happens in real life. Routines, responsibility, play, and trying again.

We are grateful for your partnership and excited for what’s ahead.
