Spelling & Word Study at WHPS

Spelling Is More Than Memorizing Words.

Children begin by hearing sounds, forming letters, and making increasingly logical attempts to represent words. Over time, they discover that English spelling is a system they can learn to understand: sounds and patterns, syllables, prefixes and suffixes, roots, word relationships, meaning, and even the histories of words.

The goal is not simply to memorize this week's list. It is to give children the knowledge and strategies to understand words, solve unfamiliar ones, and become increasingly accurate and independent writers.

A Simplified Progression

What Can This Child Do Now? What Comes Next?

This parent-friendly page is a simplified view of our much more detailed teacher progression. Teachers use the full progression to see what a child already understands about spelling and words, identify what they are ready to work on next, and help shape individual goals.

Those goals come to life through explicit teaching, word study, practice, feedback, and application in children's everyday reading and writing. The complete teacher progression extends into skills typically found through 12th-grade curriculum, so learning can keep moving when a child is ready.

The progression helps us see what comes next. Great teaching helps children get there.
