Reading Opens the Door to Deeper Thinking.
Strong reading begins with the foundations: hearing sounds, connecting letters and sounds, decoding words, building fluency, and making meaning from text. As those skills become increasingly automatic, children use reading to infer, question, analyze, interpret, and think more deeply.
These skills develop together. Even our youngest readers make predictions, notice meaning, and respond to stories, while older readers continue drawing on foundational skills as texts become more complex.
As children develop their reading skills, they also develop their own tastes and interests as readers. Within a genre, they often have a range of books to choose from, allowing them to explore topics that genuinely engage them. These choices help build motivation and give teachers opportunities to deepen the work. As decoding and fluency become more automatic, instruction increasingly emphasizes interpretation, analysis, synthesis, and other complex thinking skills.
At WHPS, we work to understand the reader in front of us, recognize what they can already do, and help them take their next meaningful step.
