In addition to the in-school activities and classes, students are involved in a variety of experiences that enhance and extend the curriculum:
- The Mandarin Language Program is a part of the WHPS Foreign Language Program and is an enrichment class offered after school for WHPS students. While Spanish is part of the normal school day, Mandarin simply doesn't fit into an already full schedule. The classes are offered after school and are one of the more popular offerings.
Field Trips such as live stage performances, museums, special events, environmental displays and local industry are coordinated to complement classroom instruction and further provide children with real world hands-on experiences. 4th and 5th grade participate in an annual overnight trip to Astrocamp and the Catalina Island Marine Institute.
WHPS After School Program and Homework Club includes a daily snack and provides a variety of activities including crafts, cooking projects, games, movies and the fun activities of the extended day care program. As part of the After School Program, a homework period for students in the 1st through 5th grades is provided. This is a time when children can do their homework in a quiet, supervised atmosphere.
The WHPS Parent Speaker Series invites experts in the field to present and discuss parenting skills and other important topics in children's lives, such as Executive Functioning Giftedness, Anxiety, Defiance, Emotional Intelligence, Middle School Selection, and more. Free childcare is provided at these events as well. Check out this year's workshop offerings.
